Mariela Castro, director of the National Sexual Education Center, stressed the need to understand that the current document, which has been in force for 30 years with some modifications adopted over the past decade, has been the subject of studies aimed at updating it according to current reality.
The draft code, still to be concluded, underscores solidarity and social justice among all human beings without genre distinction, said Mariela Castro, who explained that the objective is the democratization of relations between men and women in the family context and the modification of historically inherited patterns. Mariela Castro also referred to the need of wiping out from Cuban society all discrimination against people due to their sexual preferences and she added that the new code stipulates that men and women be considered equal without distinction of genre. The new proposed code, on which several women lawyers expressed their views at the plenary session, favors larger social inclusion and diversity, and it particularly aims at promoting a more efficient performance of courts dealing with family issues, particularly their decisions in the cases of violence against women. The draft code proposal encouraged the participation of delegates to the FMC Congress analyzing community work issues due to its impact on the development of the Cuban legislation, considered as the most advanced ones in the region, due to its human values.
